Cobra Verde

"I have to shoot without any breaks. I yell at Herzog and hit him. I have to fight for every sequence. I wish Herzog would catch the plague, more than ever.  He was even more helpless, more stupid and at the same time more persistent against me, than he was in the last four films, I shot with him. Although he urgently needed my help, and pretended, he would kiss my ass for that, he did the opposite behind my back. The people from Ghana are friendly and peaceful. Herzog knew, how to use them for his purpose. I knew his criminal and enslaving methods since Peru, where he always went for the most helpless and where I eventually called him Adolf Hitler. In Ghana he excelled himself."

Few of Klaus Kiski´s comments on Cobra Verde are accessible. At the shooting time of this film (the late 1980s) Kinski´s difficulty and eccentricsm had developed that far, that it was nearly impossible to have a normal conversation with him. Interviews from this time demonstrate the enourmous distance between Kinski´s world and the reality of others. The gap between Kinski and other human beings had become insurmountable. Kinski´s sensivity had increased to such extremity that he could barely stand the presence of others. He put all his energy into his last project "Kinski Paganini", a portrait of his alter ego, devil´s violinist; more a kind of a direct Kinski experience, than a film. However, critics and audience were not ready for this sort of cinema. Kinski´s loneliness was his destiny. One of the few men, that came near him was Werner Herzog, but even he regarded "Paganini" as unfilmable. Kinski died the 23rd of November 1991, his legacy lives on:

"I came into this world in the form of a human, but the sun, the stars, the wind, fire, deserts, forests, mountains, skies, oceans, and clouds were trapped inside me. Do not be sad, Nanhoi [Kinski´s son]. The truth is, I can never die. For I will be in everything and see you in everything and watch over you. I am your reaction in the water of a mountain lake. I am your shadow and I am the light that creates your shadow. I am your fairy tale. Your dream. Your wishes and desires, and I am their fulfillment. I am your thirst and your hunger and your food and your drink..."
