In the scene depicted here, Student Zhang reclines on his daybed with his zither at his side. Day beds were only meant for one person as the Chinese term 'dumianchuang' means 'bed for sleeping alone.' Therefore, this scene subtely implies Zhang's longing for a mate and his lustful attitude.
This design is highly coloured and decorated and in reality would likely be quite delicately executed as it is painted onto silk.
