Library of famous Books

masterman spine.jpg (8622 bytes) master cover.jpg (21292 bytes) This series, like the Warwick Library has been produced with several versions of book cover designs.  This cover on the left is highly figural when compared to the other highly abstract designs as below.

This book cover design, shows the influence of a Japoniste style which has several characteristics.  This scene, lacking in western perspective, shows spatial recession by moving diagonally from the bottom left to the top right.  At the same time, one can see the use of a high horizon coupled with repeated bird and tree forms which lead the viewers eye up towards the distance.

This style is then continued onto the spine, which is obstructed due to the books condition.  At the same time the use of gold detail is also continued onto the spine in order to highlight the book's title.

This design is then continued onto the cover, in an elongated form which mirrors the shape of the spine.

This design was used throughout several titles in the Library of Famous Books, and often appeared in a variety of different colours.
