Symbolism

Symbolism from the continent was something which Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow four had been aware of, having exhibited with the members of the Vienna Secession.  This became a massive influence to both Talwin Morris and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

In particular they would have been aware of the work of  Jan Toorop who placed great emphasis on the expressive quality of the line, and use similar symbolic motifs in his highly decorative depictions of women

This use of expressive line and the stylisation of images, especially that of the the female form and organic symbols, can be seen in the work of Charles Rennie Mackinosh and that of the rest of the Glasgow Four.   This would have then been transmitted to Talwin Morris and can be seen in his use of the flowing line and flattened perspective prevalent in his book cover designs.
