Natalya Goncharova (1881 - 1962)

1881    Born at Negaevo in Tula, into an aristocratic family

1891     Enrolled at the Moscow institute of Painting , Sculpture and Architecture

             to study sculpture

1892      Starts studying painting after meeting Mikhail Larionov (1881 – 1964)

1906     Exhibits in the Russian Exhibition at the Salon d’Automne , Paris which

             was organized by Diaghilev

1908 –10 Contributes to three exhibitions including "The Golden Fleece"

1910      Founder-member with Larionov of "The Knave of Diamonds" group

1911     Co-founder with Larionov of "The Donkey’s Tail" group contributing to its

             only exhibition in Moscow 1912

1912    Contributes to Roger Fry’s 2nd Post-Impressionist Exhibition London

1912– 1913 Moves from Neo – primitivist style to a synthesis of Futurism and Rayonism

             Illustrates Futurist books of verse for Khlebinikov and Kruchenykh 

           "A Game In Hell"

1913     Rayonist Manifesto written by Larionov and Goncharova signed by 11 artists –               work shown at the "Target Group" exhibition

            Publication of "The Donkey’s Tail" and "Target"

            Large one-woman exhibition Moscow displaying 768 work

1914     Publishes portfolio of 14 lithographs "Mythical Images of War" 

             Solo exhibition of 249 works St. Petersburg

            Larionov and Goncharova exhibition Paris at Galerie Paul Guillaume

            Designs scenery and costumes for Le Coq d’Or debut 24th May

1915    Designs sets and costumes for Goldoni’s Fan

            Designs costumes for Liturgie

1916    Designs costumes for Spanish ballets Rhapsodie Espagnole and Triana which failed              to be produced

            New production of Sadko relaunched, costumes by Goncharov

1918      Settles with Larionov in Paris

1922     Exhibition with Larionov New York Kingore Gallery

1923     Designs Les Noces for Diaghilev

1926     L’Oiseau de Feu produced London

1920’s   Illustrates Russian Fairytales

1932     Decor and costumes for Tsar Saltan in Kovno , Lithuania

1938     Goncharova and Larionov become French citizens

              Costumes and décor for Cinderella produced by de Basil at Covent Garden

1948     Sets and costumes for the opera The Barber of Seville London

1954     Room devoted to Goncharova and Larionov at the Diaghilev exhibition in London                and Edinburgh

1956     Retrospective exhibition of her work in Paris at Galerie de’ Institut

1930’s - 50’s     Designs posters , paints , illustrates verse and novels

1962     Goncharova dies in Paris October 17th
