Rayonnism

Rayonnism, primarily formulated by Larionov , derived from Italian Futurism. From the basis of Futurism Larionov developed his own system of capturing the fractured mass of an object on canvas. The new style was announced in 1913 with the publication of the Rayonnist Manifesto and with an exhibition by the Target Group(right). targetgroup.jpg (75835 bytes)*

Visually Rayonnism owes alot to the Futurist concept of dynamism which was employed to denote fast successive movement and the mechanics of modern technology, but it was the futurists committment to the future and the rejection of the shackles of the art of the past which inspired Larionov most.

The manifesto lays out Larionov's theory stating "The style of rayonist painting that we advance signifies spatial forms arising from the interjection of the reflected rays of various objects , forms chosen by the artists will".

Adhering to the notion that the eye does not see actual objects but only the reflected rays emanating from them in space making whole entities themself , Larionov's rayonism empahasised "the combination of colour, its saturation, the relation of coloured masses , depth, texture" .

Eleven artists including Goncharova signed themanifesto . She produced a number of works conforming to the laws of rayonism and they show her art at its most abstract.
