ARM Strand Course Descriptors, Semester 2: (12 Weeks January - June)Course 5 - Records & the Transition to the DigitalAimsThis course aims to further develop the theoretical knowledge and core skills learnt during semester 1. The course will look in some detail at the intellectual underpinnings of ISO 15489, the International Standard for Records Management. Records continuum thinking, the post-custodial debate and the role of archivists in relation to societal memory will be addressed. Some management and statistical tools will be addressed. Assessment50% Essay 1 Course 6 - Archives & Records TheoryAimsThis course outlines the basic principles of archives and records theory. Looking at the way in which theory sits alongside and influences professional practice, this course covers such topics as record keeping theory and principles, notions of the active and inactive record, the role of record keeping within modern society, ways in which theory influences policy development and is in turn influenced by legislation, the balance between organisational needs and wants, legislation, and the likely needs of future researchers.
