Current Research Projects

Digital Preservation Policy Scoping Study

To adress the challenges and risks associated with the long-term maintnenance of digital information, the University will shortly begin a scoping study project to establish an institutional roadmap to develop and implement a University-wide digital preservation policy. The studies will be run by staff in HATII together with the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Office.

 

Digital Library Interoperability, Best Practices & Modelling Foundations (DL.org)

The Coordination Action DL.org will create a framework where representatives from digital library initiatives and projects collaborate, share experiences and expertise. The project will work towards increased awareness and understanding of interoperability of digital libraries systems and towards a consolidated version of the DELOS Digital Library Reference Model.

Sustaining Heritage Access through Multivalent Archiving (SHAMAN)

This project will develop and test a next generation digital preservation framework including tools for analysing, ingesting, managing, accessing and reusing information objects and data across libraries and archives.

Centre for Technology and Phenomenological Research

The Centre conducts research into the nature of subjective experience in itself, but also into how it is influenced and shaped by the dual necessities of intersubjectivity and technology.

Planets - digital preservation, research and technology

The Planets project brings together European National Libraries and Archives, leading research institutions, and technology companies to address the challenge of preserving access to digital cultural and scientific knowledge.

DigitalPreservationEurope, building on the earlier successful work of ERPANET, facilitates pooling of the complementary expertise that exists across the academic research, cultural, public administration and industry sectors in Europe.

Non-Commercial Digital Repositories and Archives Project

This project will aim to identify every repository of digital content that is free to UK HE institutions and hosted within the UK, whether it is presented as an archive, Content Management System, repository, or Web-based collection.

 

Visualising Archival Finding Aids

This speculative research, funded by the AHRC, looks to test the technical viability and utility of providing an innovative, multidimensional visualisation to EAD finding aids.

Promotes the collection and use of digital data resources to support research, learning and teaching in the performing arts and screen media. AHDS plays an active role in research, preservations, reporting and user-support.

Digital Curation Centre (DCC)

The DCC provides a national focus for research into the preservation and management of digital data and promotes expertise and good practice, nationally and internationally, for the management of all research outputs in digital format.

DELOS

The DELOS network conducts a programme of activities to integrate and coordinate the ongoing research activities of major European teams working in Digital Libraries with the goal of developing the next generation of Digital Library technologies.

ERPANET

ERPANET provides a virtual clearinghouse and knowledge-base on state-of-the-art developments in digital preservation. It brings together memory organisations, ICT industry, research institutions, government organisations (including local), entertainment and creative industries, and commercial sectors (for example pharmaceuticals, petro-chemical, and financial).

DigiCULT

Digital Culture (DigiCULT) builds on the knowledge and expertise of over 50 cultural heritage experts in order to discuss and analyse current and future trends in several technology domains that have been identified as key areas of interest to cultural and scientific heritage institutions.

Primarily History

This longitudinal research project examines how historians are searching for primary sources; how they are teaching and advising their students to do so; and how archivists can best facilitate such information discovery through online services.
